Before we start, I’d like to offer you a printed version of each day’s activities. This comes in the form of our course diary. Download the diary if you’d like to print a hard copy of the tasks, so that you can follow along and fill it out each day. We’ve got a PDF and a Word doc, depending on what you’d prefer.

Today’s Tasks

Top tip: Listen to the Audio Podcast – it includes examples to help you know what to look out for.

Task One:

As you go about your work today look around you to spot evidence that spiritual care is already happening. This is about noticing what is already happening around you.

  • What actions or little things do other people do that raise the spirits of residents?
  • What actions or little things do you do that raise the spirits of residents?

Be specific here – aim for at least 2 examples of each.

Task Two:

Answer the following questions in the comments section. You should aim to spend 5-10 minutes on this.

  1. What was the most spirit-raising action that you noticed today?
  2. What did you do today that raised one of your resident’s spirits?

It’s not just what people do, it’s the way that they do it. What makes your answers to 1 and 2 good examples of spiritual care? For example, is it the skills they use or the type of attention they give. This is a bit tricky, have a go and we will look at this in more detail tomorrow.

Good work, that’s day 1 done – I look forward to reading your answers!

The challenge for older people is to make sense of life at a stage when loss and change occur more frequently and perhaps more painfully.
